“Kii-chan!”
Aiba smiled to himself at that voice; the beautiful, high-pitched voice that was melodious in every tone, the voice that always sent warm chills up his skin and rumbled ambers of subtle desire in the pits of his heart. She was the only one to ever call him that, and he liked it a lot to such figurative that his heart could just melt with love.
“Kii-chan,” that voice repeated from behind, “you said we were going swimming!”
Aiba turned around and grinned at the tiny woman who was casting narrowed eyes at him. “What do you mean, Asa-chan? We are going swimming.”
Asami jabbed a finger at the very thick tree trunk which Aiba was leaning against, and said in mock horror, “You didn’t mention anything about a forest and fishing rods and Ohno-kun bringing himself and his fishing buddies along!”
“Well… Tsuyoshi-kun isn’t so bad, you know…”
“I’ve never met him and he kinda crept me out back in the car…” Asami muttered under her breath.
“…And how can you not love kawaii little Chinen? He’ll be so hurt to hear you don’t want him around you,” Aiba retorted slyly. Asami glared at him; Aiba’s clearly enjoying all the teasing.
Asami pouted, “When you called me out for a weekend trip to Kyoto, I was actually imagining nice, sandy beaches—”
“There’re no beaches in Kyoto!” Aiba exclaimed in mirth, and laughed at Asami’s silliness to which she reddened deeply. She turned her hot and embarrassed face away and clutched the straps of her backpack tighter to herself. Aiba sighed, sometimes wondering in awe how she could be so innocent and naïve. But then again, that’s just what he adored about her.
He took her hand in his to comfort her. “C’mon, you still get to try out that new swimsuit of yours,” he told her with a grin, and led her down the forest trail towards the distant sound of the river flowing calmly against the rocks.
They finally saw the river down below them, wide and majestic and yet the water flowing downstream was serene and soothing. Upstream, they could hear very indistinctly the thundering sound of the waterfall, splashing with all its fearful might onto the rock-hard boulders and into the pool that gave life to this river. To this, Aiba glanced at Asami, a little nervously because he was unsure if she was happy with his unexpected surprise. At the sight of Asami’s large grin, he immediately breathed in relief and he himself broke into a contented smile.
“Let’s go, I see Ohno and the guys already unpacking their gear,” Aiba said, and guided Asami down to the riverbank.
Ohno, Tsuyoshi and Chinen were already setting up their bags and their fishing gears into the small boat, along with their can of worms and their bento which Asami kindly prepared for them in the morning. Ohno was loading a large cooler box onto the boat, which they suspected was probably packed with beer inside (and Coke and chilled ocha for the underage boy). Ohno straightened up and wiped a sweat off his brow, said something to Chinen gleefully and spotted the couple striding towards them.
“Did you get lost on the way?” Ohno merely asked.
“Not really, gomen! Just had a little… mishap,” Aiba replied, raising a questioning eyebrow at Asami as though expecting her to explain their delay.
Asami ignored him and purposely went off the subject. “If you guys are still hungry after your bento, I’ve packed some sushi and muffins,” she said, patting the pink bag Aiba was carrying.
“I love muffins!” Chinen squealed, bouncing over to Ohno’s side.
“Five sets of bento, a huge box of sushi and muffins? Did you spend all night making these?” Aiba asked suspiciously. He was concerned with Asami’s habit of going all out to make sure she could provide for everyone, being so selfless to the point of lack of sleep which made Aiba worried.
“I bought the sushi, and I made the muffins last night,” Asami explained, and to solidify her word, she squeezed Aiba’s hand gently. Aiba nodded with understanding.
“We’re ready to go,” Tsuyoshi called to them, already sitting in the boat and clinging onto the paddles as though he would actually paddle off on his gleeful lone self and have all the beer to himself.
Aiba and Asami waved at the threesome as they climbed onto the boat and rowed upstream, yelling back that they were “gonna be somewhere” and “will take a loooong time” and “behave yourselves!” before disappearing off. Asami narrowed her eyes at the ‘behave yourselves’ part and looked at Aiba questioningly.
“What?” Aiba mouthed innocently.
Asami didn’t reply, but dumped all her bags onto the grass and started peeling off her clothes. Aiba watched her with transfixed and glued eyes as she shrugged her shirt off, her bare arms greeting his hot face. His heart throbbed faster as Asami gripped the waistline of her pants and pulled down, revealing smooth legs of china porcelain; underneath she wore a banana-yellow swimsuit with straps tied around her neck and bared her entire back, as white as alabaster.
It was Asami’s turn to look at him curiously and go, “What? C’mon, I want to jump into the water now!” and before Aiba could say something, she had already run towards the river, squealing as she dived into the water.
Aiba grinned and shouted, “I’m coming after you!”
Asami gasped in delighted horror and started swimming away, just as Aiba had already pulled off his clothes and dived into the river after her in his Hawaiian swimming shorts. Asami wasn’t doing very good at escaping, and only managed two metres before Aiba, with his long and athletic legs, caught hold of her ankle and pulled her to him.
“Yamete kudasai!” Asami giggled in an excited high-pitched voice that mirrored Aiba’s, thrashing around and struggling out of Aiba’s locked grip around her waist.
“You’re so noisy, even Ohno-kun is gonna hear your voice from half a kilometre away,” Aiba remarked.
“That’s because you’re not being very nice with me,” Asami retorted unkindly, but she was encircling her arms around his neck and snuggling closer to him.
They raced each other countless times, from the riverbank to the other side, and upstream trying to see who could catch up with Ohno’s boat first, but gave up because puzzlingly they couldn’t find Ohno’s boat. They then competed in who could stay underwater the longest, but Asami, being stubbornly competitive whenever she wanted to beat Aiba, ended up choking and spurting on water. Aiba pulled her up to the surface and refused to let her go, adamant that she didn’t do it again.
So now Asami rode on Aiba’s back, clinging onto his shoulders and egging on him to swim faster, much to his annoyance.
“I’m not your horse!” Aiba exclaimed as his arms stroked into the water gracefully.
“You’re the one who wanted me to hold onto you, so suffer the consequences. Giddy up!” Asami squealed, her knees lightly nudging into his back.
“Just stay still already, I can’t move with you kicking into my sides!”
“C’mon, make yourself useful!”
In a swift and unexpected motion, Aiba spun around and caught her by surprise that she squeaked out loud. He grasped her so very close to him, pressing her body so very intimately into his that she could feel his heartbeats thudding hurriedly against his chest. “You’re just impossible to handle,” Aiba breathed in amusement.
“After twenty-nine months together you still can’t babysit me?” Asami said incredulously.
“You counted.”
“Yeah, and do you know that tomorrow will be our thirtieth month?”
“Really?”
“…You don’t keep track, do you?”
“You have no idea.”
Asami shook her head in disappointment, muttering, “how thoughtful of you,” under her breath. Aiba chuckled, in that soft merry laughter than rang out like music, and hugged her tighter. “Unlike you, I counted the days,” he said.
“Oh really?” Asami said, absent-mindedly tracing her hand over the birthmark on his left shoulder.
“Yes really.”
Asami grinned broadly and shone her joyous eyes at him. “Happy early two-and-half-years anniversary, then,” she wished in a soft murmur.
“Happy early two-and…” Aiba didn’t finish his sentence, because he had lowered his head to her anticipating lips and kissed her squarely. Their lips fell into a gentle rhythm, pressing into each other with a patient and loving need. Asami treaded her slim fingers through his wet hair, resting her hand on the back of his head and pressing him closer to her. The kiss was sweet and oozed with dizzy love and overwhelming adoration, time seemed to have stopped along with it. There, afloat in the sun-warmed summer river in the very heart of a peaceful forest, they wrapped each other and kissed to the blissful two-and-half years since the day Aiba gasped out the words ‘I love you’.
When they broke off, breathless and all smiling, Asami murmured, “Kii-chan, would I be able to kiss you like this, hold onto you like this, for the rest of my life?”
Kissing her nose affectionately, Aiba replied, “For every single day, yes.”
Who could ever break them, when this union was impenetrable, unbreakable, strong and everlasting? Not when they believed in a life ahead of them, treading that life confidently holding the hand of one another. But for now, there were only the two of them in their small world, their little corner of heaven, where nothing existed but their love.
And maybe the three pairs of watching eyes from behind a bush.
“So, now I guess I’m going to get a month supply of free ramen,” Ohno nodded with a slight satisfaction.
“For what, Ohno-kun?” Chinen asked.
“For taking up the best fishing spot of the entire stretch of the river.”
