Chapter 13;

She seems to be really down. Her atmosphere seems so tense… maybe I should ask… Tetsuya’s thoughts interrupted.

“Tetsuya…when we were together, what did you think of me?” Natsuko asked and looked at Tetsuya which made him blush in confusion. He took a while to answer which made Natsuko’s heart slow down. “Boring, huh? I’m boring right? That’s why even after we parted you didn’t even try to catch up to me to get back together. I’m boring. You want other type of girl’s experiences. I’m just a toy used for playing.”

“NO! NOT AT ALL! I think you were fun to be with! I’m serious! I was joking when I said that to you when we broke up! I was a jerk! I admit it! I’m sorry! I’m really sorry!” Tetsuya said as he stared at Natsuko looking into her eyes to see whether he’s forgiven.

“Relax. I knew. I know a lot about you from dating for 5 months, you know,” Natsuko said. “And I don’t know anything of him after being engaged for 2 months. I can’t even tell what he’s thinking after being a friend of his after all this years…now I’m somehow…betrayed.” Natsuko mumbled slowly in her mind and Tetsuya calmed down when he saw Natsuko’s eyes coming back to life.

“You looked down…when you saw that guy a moment ago? Isn’t he a famous idol? Why are you down so suddenly,” Tetsuya asked. “Oh, it must be because you saw him with another girl! You must be a true fan and you’ll feel sad when your subject is stolen by someone else wouldn’t you?”

Natsuko was taken aback. He knows nothing; I can’t snap at him now and start blaming him for making me feel worse. I’ll be dragging him into this mess later on! He should just stay away. But Tetsuya…is so kind to even think of me fully right now. Natsuko somehow lightened up a bit and smiled to Tetsuya. “You’re right. It seems that I was overly jealous when I saw the person I admire being taken by someone else.” She lied. She couldn’t tell him the truth… not yet.

“Then, why don’t you change your interest?” Tetsuya suggested and care freely walked with his hands behind his head.

“Change… my interest?” Natsuko asked. “Change my interest…”

“Yeah! Like telling your heart who’s throbbing for him to pay attention to someone else! Like breaking up the thoughts of him away and place another!” Tetsuya said as he got excited when he saw Natsuko somehow amazed at his thought.

“Break…up,” Natsuko said and looked at Tetsuya. I don’t think I can pull it off. “Can I ask you a question?” Natsuko asked and Tetsuya stared at her. “Were you deeply hurt when I broke up with you?”

Tetsuya smiled and shook his head. “That feeling couldn’t even be put into words; you should know that once you feel it too.”

“I’ll feel it soon,” Natsuko said and faced the ground. “I’m sure I’ll feel it soon.”

“Are…Are you with someone?” Tetsuya asked in shock. I might’ve said something to ignite the bomb in Natsuko’s heart and gain rage. She might be hurt by my words! Tetsuya thought. Demon Natsuko might come out and choke me saying; “WHAT WOULD YOU KNOW?!”!

“With someone? I… don’t know,” Natsuko said. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.”

“Natsuko…,” Tetsuya said in silence.

“Ah! I have to go somewhere right now! See you soon, Tetsuya!” Natsuko started when she felt tears welling up and ran away from Tetsuya before he could see any of it.

A feeling that can’t be put into words…I understand it now… Natsuko thought as she continued to run.

“Oi, Natsuko!” Jun shouted and waved to Natsuko after she ran out from the park and was caught off guard so she wiped her tears thoroughly making a very red mark on her eyes. “Something wrong with your eye?” Jun asked.

“Huh? Oh, the wind blew some dust into it! I’m fine! The weather’s way too windy today, so I’m heading back home,” Natsuko said.

“Oh speaking of which, Sho said he wanted to have a talk with you,” Jun said. “He asked me to look for you, said to bring you to the building.”

Hopefully it’s about the Hiroki thing. Jun said with hopeful thoughts. My plan won’t be in vain! I assure you! It mustn’t!

“I’ll go see him now,” Natsuko nodded her head and turned around with a frown. The time to give up is narrowing, should I head back? Natsuko asked. She shook her head. No, I mustn’t think like this.

“Natsuko?” Jun asked, noticing her absence in her thoughts.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Natsuko said, facing Jun, forcing a small smile on her face. “Let’s get going.”

“You wanted to see me?” Natsuko asked as she entered the room Jun asked her to go to. Outside, Jun and the others had gathered to eavesdrop on their conversation.

“Oh, you’re already here,” Sho said, closing a novel he was reading as he got up from the chair. His face was serious, causing Natsuko to feel uneasy. She had a bad feeling on what was going to happen.

“Jun said you wanted to talk to me,” Natsuko said, walking past Sho to the window, looking out at the streets.

“Natsuko…” Sho started. “I have something to tell you, it’s very important.”

“What is it?”

Sho took a deep breath. His decision was firm, but he was afraid that what he would say would cause Natsuko to get angry; but he wasn’t going to back out now. Something inside him prevented him from doing so.

“Natsuko…” Sho said; turning around so their backs were facing each other. “… I’m breaking off our engagement. I think… I think that’s what’s best for both of us.”

Natsuko’s heart stopped beating. It shattered into a million pieces. She could feel the tears rimming her eyes, but she stopped herself from crying. She didn’t want Sho to see her in this state; as a helpless little girl.

“I see…”

Sho turned to face Natsuko, surprised at her calmness to his statement.

“You’re… okay with it?”

“Shouldn’t I be?” Natsuko approached him. “What were you expecting me to say? ‘Why?! Why are you doing this?!’? I’m fine with it Sho, I don’t care about it. Besides, I was the one from the start who always wanted us to break up. After all; you have someone you care for more than I do, right?”

Natsuko’s reference to Hiroki hit Sho right at the heart. How did she know?!

“I saw you guys the other day,” Natsuko said, as if she was reading his mind. “I hope you’ll be happy with her. Goodbye.”

She walked past Sho without giving a second glance, heading straight for the door.
“Natsuko! I…” Sho said, trying to stop her from leaving. She stopped in her tracks for a moment to listen to what Sho was about to say.

“I… I think I’m in love with Hiroki, that’s why I’m breaking my engagement to you, I hope you understand.”

Natsuko didn’t say anything; but gave a small clutch to her necklace before walking out of the door. Passing by Jun like he’s a ghost gave a bad idea to Jun.

“Natsuko?” Jun said but to Natsuko, his voice was a mere whisper. She couldn’t hear anything. Rinoa and Squall huh? What a funny thought. She clutched the necklace tighter and walked in a faster pace which now somehow irritates Jun. You promised to be my Squall… didn’t you?

“NATSUKO?!” Jun shouted and ran up to her. Nothing, she didn’t hear nor feel a soul anywhere near her. She’s in a dimension where her only thoughts mattered. She returned to her dimension when Sho left her before, she’s now back, and she’ll remain there.

The moment Jun ran out from the building, he found Natsuko nowhere in sight. “Damn! Where did you go? That bastard Sho!” Jun cursed and Aiba placed his hand on Jun’s shoulder.

“You cursed the wrong person,” Aiba said. Ohno and Nino were behind them agreeing with Aiba.

“You’re right. The one to pay now is that woman who caused all this!” Jun said. I told you my plan was going to be successful, and I intend to make it that way. Jun thought in a confident tone.

“But first things first, what did Sho say to Natsuko? We may be on the wrong track if we decide things half heartedly,” Ohno said staring at Jun which shrugged his shoulders.

“Mission number one to ‘Get Sho and Natsuko Back’ is to find Natsuko!” Jun said and Aiba and Ohno punched their fists in the air.

“Boy, you’re so full of missions aren’t you?” Nino sighed.

“What’s up guys? You’re hyper today!” Natsume came in through the gates with grocery bags in her hands.

“Have you seen Natsuko?” Aiba asked.

“Hmm? Yeah, she ran past me a moment ago. She looked as if she was entering a running marathon, I didn’t have time to ask her what’s up. You guys know anything?”
Natsume asked. Her purple hat flew as the wind blew it away. “Wow! It’s so windy!” Natsume said and saw her hat caught by Jun.

“Here,” Jun smiled and handed Natsume’s hat.

“Thank you,” Natsume said, just as she did, she saw Sho on the phone with someone coming out from the door, holding a novel and passed them without taking second glances, not even a greeting. “He got problems too?”

“We’ll explain,” Ohno said and they all went inside the building.

“I see,” Natsume said as she took a sip of her hot chocolate that she prepared for everyone. “So the whole thing is the ‘H’ girl’s fault, eyh?”

“It’s Hiroki,” Aiba interrupted, causing Nino to hit him on the head.

“Yeah, but it seems we can’t do much since Sho actually fell for her,” Ohno continued and he took a meat dumpling Natsume bought.

“I’m in,” Natsume said and everyone looked at her in confusion.

“In what?” Aiba asked.

“I’m taking in the mission as well. No one messes with a Kiri, especially since that Kiri is my sister!” Natsume said.

“Alright! The more the merrier!” Jun punched his fists into the air. “Yosh! Let’s find Natsuko!” Jun got up in excitement and so did Aiba and Ohno.

“Where are we going to find her anyway? We don’t have the slightest clue where she is,” Nino stated in a blunt tone.

Jun paused to think for a moment. “Natsume said she saw her run past her but I still have an odd feeling she’s in the building somewhere. Let’s split up and look for her, alright? How’s that sound?”

“OSU! Let’s do it!” Natsume, Aiba, Nino and Ohno shouted.

“Meet back in this room in an hour,” Jun said, and the five of them split their ways to go and search for Natsuko.

Jun and Ohno were stuck looking around the building, while Aiba, Nino and Natsume were looking for Natsuko outside the building, around the area.

“Where could she be?” Jun said, running through the hallway. He stopped himself when he noticed the door leading to the rooftop was open. Having the intuition that she might be up there, he started going up the stairs.

Nearly reaching the end of the stairs, Jun had paused when he heard a singing voice.

Ashita e to tsuzuku

That voice… Jun recognized it at once. It was Natsuko! Jun quickened his pace as he continued to hear her voice. There she was, standing near the railing. Natsuko stopped singing once she felt Jun’s presence, and turned around to face him, a little surprised that he had found her.

“So, you were here all along,” Jun said, trying to lighten up the atmosphere as he stood next to her, leaning against the railing. Natsuko didn’t say anything, and continued looking down at the scenery below.

She seems really down…if only I could think of something to say to her! But I can’t think of anything! Jun thought in frustration as a long silence passed between them.

“You know…” Natsuko said, breaking the silence between them. “I thought... I thought what happened that night meant something special. But now that I think about it… if I knew about Hiroki before that happened, maybe I wouldn’t be feeling like this right now. Maybe… maybe I would be as crushed as I am right now.”

Jun glanced at Natsuko. Her eyes were glistening with tears as she had a small, sad file on her face.

“I was stupid to fall for him. Maybe it was better if I continued disliking him, don’t you think? That way no one would have to see me in this state,”

“Natsuko…” Jun murmured. “Natsuko, it’s not your fault. What happened wasn’t your fault, don’t blame yourself. I’ll tell you a story, but I don’t know if it’d cheer you up.”
Jun took a deep breath.

“There was a girl I met two months ago, through a family friend of hers. At first sight I thought; “Wow, I like her.” She seemed like a really pretty girl, and I wanted to even laugh at the way she was scolding the friend of hers. That night, I had asked her friend for her number, saying I wanted to get to know her better and even if I planned a plan to get the two of them together. Even if she didn’t directly admit it, or if she didn’t show it, I could tell she actually really loved her friend, and that made me want to get them together even more, but now… something happened and I wish I could do something about that.”

“W- Wait a minute… that sounded like-”

“Look, I know I might not be the best person around but...” Jun said, interrupting Natsuko with a grin. “If you need anything, just come to me. I’ll help you out okay, Rinoa?”

“Rinoa?” Natsuko said, raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, that’s who you are, right? That’s who I think you are like, well, not me but ‘we’,” Jun said, giving a laugh.

“Jun… you’re a really nice friend, you know that?” Natsuko said, wiping away a tear that had somehow managed to fall as she gave a small laugh. “… Thank you.”

“Sho? What’s wrong?” Hiroki asked, approaching Sho as he came to greet her at the café they were going to have their date at.

“Huh? Oh… nothing. I just seem to be a little bit lost in my thoughts today,” Sho said, giving a weak smile to Hiroki. “Don’t worry about me; let’s just go inside, okay? I think I made you wait too long, and I’m sorry about that.”

“It’s okay! Come on, let’s go!” Hiroki cheerfully said, taking Sho’s hand as she led him into the café.

The moment Hiroki took Sho’s hand; he felt a strange feeling inside him, like there was a feeling of emptiness in his heart.
